Many great inventions came out of the 1800′s. This was the century that brought us steel, safety pins, rubber bands, useable electricity, and the telephone. It was the stage for much of the first industrial revolution, and the beginning of the second industrial revolution, also known as the Technological Revolution. Many of the tools we use today came from this magnificent era. It was truly a time that brought us many ways to better our lives today. But it also brought us one of the worst things we can do to our bodies.
The Soda Fountain was invented in the 19th century. At the time, it was a fun thing a family could do together, or a young couple on a date, and it was all very innocent. Included in these trips to the soda fountain was a nice walk. Not included were endless refills. Left this way, a nice sugary treat in the form of an occasional soda may have remained an innocent benefit of the industrious American nature. We just could not stop there, though. We have taken sodas too far.
Soda, pop, coke, whatever you call it, you can find it everywhere. One company has even managed to get their product in the hands of furry residents of the icy tundras in the cold tips of our globe. Most American schools provide students access to these drinks. Many businesses will have at least one vending machine offering a wide variety of options. And if you can’t find what you want at any of these spots, there is an endless number of gas stations and fast food restaurants that can give you almost anything you want, and sometimes in a pretty extravagant size. Getting a soda no longer requires a nice walk, and there is nearly no limit on the amount you can have in one sitting.
Is soda bad for you? Well, our bodies don’t seem to like it. This shouldn’t be too shocking; some sodas can be used to strip battery acid off car batteries. Imagine what it can do to your insides. Sodas are full of sugar. Whether it’s sucrose, or fructose, or High Fructose Corn Syrup, it all seems to contribute to the spread of many health issues. Poor metabolism, type 2 diabetes, weight gain and obesity, and eventually symptoms of heart disease all seem to share a link to poor diets that are high in sugar and calories. A regular soda carries more sugar and calories than we need in a drink, and a daily practice of consuming them can lead to any of the above issues. Some try to compensate by drinking diet sodas, however they don’t seem to fair much better. Though, as this study suggests, the consumption of diet sodas may not be the direct cause of poor health, but indicative of a lifestyle that does lead to poor health.
Like we have said before, we can’t make you change your lifestyle. We can’t force you to eat a modest, healthy diet. We can’t force you to be as active as possible every day, including as much focused exercise in your schedule as you can. We also can’t change your past. We know your genetics, and past choices contribute greatly to where you are now. All we can do is suggest a change for the future. Stop drinking sodas. Some people can manage to limit their soda intake to a very small amount, and that’s great for them. But if you find yourself on the verge of addiction, and especially if you’re fully addicted, you should cut them completely out of your diet. The change in your health will surprise and delight you.
